Last week I desperately missed my late father. So,

Last week I desperately missed my late father. So, when my husband happened to drive by a particular Indonesian restaurant, I decided to order #pempek, a popular dish from my dad’s hometown.

I didn’t expect the dish to come complete with noodles and pieces of dried shrimp, the way it’s supposed to be served. Way to go, @plus62streetfood!

Enjoying the dish reminded me of one of my dad’s many cousins. He used to sell homemade pempek in front of my junior high school. Papa and I ate there at least once.

I 💚 that it’s colorful.

I 🧡 the broken heart with fragments all around—because doesn’t loss do just that to our hearts?

I 🩵 the curl in the R. It provides a playful interlude for a heavy topic like grief.

I 🩶 how the title is in lower caps. It’s a visual symbol for how grieving zaps our energy. Someone who’s grieving doesn’t necessarily have the energy to capitalize letters.

I don’t love that I lost my dad 💔, but I pray that this book will help many broken hearts find healing from their grief.
